Before you sit down to write your resume, it is imperative you do a bit of research. There is a lot of competition out there which means you must look at each and every opportunity to create a resume that catches the eye: format-wise, with keywords and pertinent experience that relates to the job you are applying for. Here are 5 things to research before putting pen to paper:

1.Job Post Key Words

Most of us do not thinking about the job posting much aside giving info about the duties related to the job, company info and qualifications needed. But when you dig deeper the job posting has so much important information that you need to consider adding to your resume. Keywords are invaluable when writing your resume. They are important words that are found in the job positing and should and must be used in your resume. One big reason: ATS (Automated Tracking Systems) scan your resume looking for these words.

2.Industry Specific Keywords

Having two sets of resumes is essential. The resume(s) that you write specifically for a job posting are your most important ones. They are geared for that position and thus gives you a better chance to landing an interview. The generic resume with industry-related keywords is great to have around just to send out or give to someone quickly. Sometimes one of these generic resumes can effectively do the trick.

3.Summary of Experience

Research and review your experience. What does each job relate to the one your applying for now? Be sure to keep your experience portion of the resume and focused. Additionally look at other resumes/LinkedIn profiles of professionals similar to you and see what their experience is like.

4.Several Key Stand-out Info

Have you done something amazing or unique that can separate you from other candidates? Be sure to write it down and be as detailed as possible. Include it in your coverletter and look at ways it could be relatable to the job you are applying for. Don’t be modest–this is the right time to trump your major accomplishment(s).

5.Company Site/Social Media

Getting to know a bit about the company you are sending your resume to is key. Check out the company site, social media accounts and try Googling them for more information. Adding a few points about the company on your coverletter is a great way to show your knowledge about them. Furthermore if you get the interview knowing about them may give you the edge over other candidates.
